Just wondering if anyone has recently rented a car in Malaysia and whether an IDP was required for car rental by the carrentalco? Section 28 of the Road Transport Act says no if the DL is in english and the issuing country is signatory to some DL treaty (both conditions fulfilled). Last time I had one, IDPs didn't have a Malay/Bahasa translation so not sure what use it'd be. Have rented in Malaysia before (not for 5 years) and just happened to have an IDP due to requiring it for somewhere else. Not sure if anyone checked.

I presume this is for short rental? If so I have used the IDP and the national driven license too. If you have a Canadian IDP, it is not a problem as Malaysia a signatory to the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. If you want for a longer time, then you would need a Malay license.
