Thanks for the data points. Both of those look okay enough. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably forgo the free room in one direction (whichever makes more sense time wise) and head into the city (maybe just NE 3rd/4th Ring) to get a sliver of a Beijing experience.

My flight is FCO-PEK-CTS and I would arrive at Beijing at 13:15 and the next flight is at 08:00 - Probably good to visit the city first - but I am not sure if I can just leave for the city and come back to the hotel on my own to check-in myself after having visited the city. I would probably ask at the transit desk and see how it goes
