My plan is to travel IBZ to AMS with my family then take my own connecting flight, so like you say, likely to confuse the system. I can't make a self-connection in AMS as I'll have bags that need to go to my new final destination so will call and try split the PRN. Assuming by doing that however, my family loose access to my status benefits on their tickets.
As indicated, just dropping the AMS-BRS leg of your journey and self-connecting to your new destination is easiest. However, any bags you check in IBZ will (initially!) labelled through to BRS (and probably offloaded from AMS-BRS if they see you did not board AMS-BRS!). Dumping a last leg always best is done when travelling hand luggage only - ensure your wife and kids check in the luggage. There is no way you can short-check luggage to AMS and collect the luggage you want to take to your new destination.
I do not know what happens if you have 4 people on one PNR with 3 having hold luggage, and then 1 not boarding a last leg of a flight.
