I booked a Jr. Suite. As a Diamond Ambassador I should get a upgrade, but in this case the is was the minimum room I would want, so that is what I booked.
If/when I return to Bangkok (and didn't want to pay the exorbitant Intercontinental rate), I'd look into the Kimpton that is located very near the Crowne Plaza.
Part of the issue might be that CP is not very generous with upgrades if booking a suite, but the hotel can provide material value if booking a non-suite; they do upgrade to suites at times.
In terms of comparing to Kimpton, the room rates at Kimpton are on average even more than IC which is being called "exorbitant" so comparing CP to Kimpton is very unfair, CP is quite modestly priced and in fact closer in price to any of the three Holiday Inns in Bangkok particularly the one in front of IC which is often even more expensive than CP. While CP is not a "wow" hotel, the value it provides knocks the socks off any of the Holiday Inns, it's not even close.
If someone has the budget for Kimpton then of course it's a nicer hotel than CP but the price is often nearly double...
