I felt the same this time last year on my first AS visit, very underwhelming. I know the champagne and wine selection has gone downhill but other aspects of the lounge didn't make up for it. Same as you, went to "AM North" (at the time), which had LP Alexandra, wonderful service and everything I needed.
In any case, giving AS one more go next week DOH-SYD; will use it for a la carte dining and maybe the Afternoon Tea, to check out some premium reds (if any), the terrace thingy mentioned above, and then will venture to AM Gardens for sushi/salad.
I really think if they just polished their service a little, and added one decent champagne back (eg. Krug or La Grande Dame), it would go a long way... even BA @ JFK has Krug (on request)
