Thanks for your reply. Your clever solution got me halfway there. I was able to enter a ticket number on the MH app which didn't allow me to do anything but did result in my flight showing on the app with an MH booking reference number!
Putting that in the MH website brought up the details of the entire booking including a seat selection option. Unfortunately going into that resulted in a message that the seat selection map was not available.
But I got far closer than I ever did before with 2 calls to the TK call centre. So thank you very much!
UPDATE: Rang Malaysia Airlines Call Centre - they could see the booking but couldn't see a seat map for the flight. They've taken down my seat request and added it as a note to the booking. Of course that doesn't guarantee anything but it feels like a much better solution than waiting for the day of the flight and asking at the airport! So thanks again.
I once had a similar situation with a KLM flight under AeroMexico flight number. No chance to select a flight - however the platinum hotline could make it - somehow they switched the flight number in my itinerary from the AM flight number to the real KL flight number and from then on my seat could be selected. Don't know if that works always and with all airlines, but that really did the trick.
