Unusual Flight Change

Was wondering if anyone can help me make sense of the best way to do this.

I've an upcoming return flight booked with KLM which is BRS > AMS > IBZ. It's booked for myself, my wife and my two kids. I'm VS Silver so have the status benefits applied to us all.

On the return they will be flying back to BRS as planned but I will be needing to go to a new destination. I currently plan to just buy a ticket from IBZ to my new destination which will connect in AMS. Therefore I would get the same flight as my family to AMS and then connect to a different flight. Then I'd just not check in to my original Bristol return leg, but my wife and kids would.

Does that make sense?!

Is this the best way to do this, or will it confuse their systems and in fact do I need to call them and rebook my flight as a new return. I'm trying to avoid doing this as I don't want it to affect my wife and kids bookings.

Any thoughts much appreciated!
