You could close this thread, and ask on either BA forum or the U.K. forum on specific advice for ABZ. There is probably for instance recommend a mini cab firm that you can book an airport ride with. It has to be cheaper than renting and parking a car for a day to just get you to the airport and less flaffing around.
there are also on the BA forum some really good advice at what to do around Heathrow if you find yourself with a 6-8 hour layover. Sitting in a lounge would not be high on my list….
I would accept that the flight change is what it is, and making the most of it.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Sitting in the lounge is not high on my list either. But I'll be travelling with someone who is 87, with mobility issues. I'll just have to hope it all works out and doesn't become an expensive trip home.
