We planed on 3 nights in Kanazawa, but I was there on 1/1 and 4:10 changed things so we were there for 4 nights.
The hotel seemed very busy and might have been full on 12/31, we went down for Soba noodles and the Elevator was full. I used my limited Japanese to ask everyone if they were going down for Soba and they all exclaimed in unison Soba! It was pretty cool.
I used a SUA so we were in a King Suite on the 9th floor. The Room is what you expect a centric room to be, the temp was set to be 25c which is much too much for me, but it seems this is the norm for Japanese hotels. While this is a Hyatt it was 99% domestic at this time (being NYE)
When the hotel emptied after the earthquake I could count on 2 hands the westerners here (ourselves included) Which I love, I know enough Japanese to get my self in trouble (They think I'm fluent so come back full speed), but it's nice to use it.
Upon check in we got this plate: Which is so pretty:
Kanazawa Centric New Years Plate
We ate breakfast at FIVE every morning, it was limited on 1/2 and a little less limited on 1/3. We had the special menu on 12/31, they had two options and I got the higher end one (real Japanese waygu) and my wife was able to get her menu to be modified so there was no beef.
I remember it being really really good. But as you can expect the events of 1/1 are what I mostly remember now.
The location is excellent, walk out of the train station on the correct side and it's right there. There are a bunch of restaurants in the same building (though you go outside to get to them). We ate a number of meals at those places - I tried Japanese BBQ where you cook the meat yourself - and I will seek that out next time. It was Good!
Being right by the station was good - since our train to Tokyo was canceled - it was NYE so of course every train is fully reserved leaving Kanazawa. I got us on a Thunderbird 2 in the 5 o'clock hour to Kyoto and then used the new perk of the JR Rail Pass to pay an upgrade for a Nozomi to get us from Kyoto to Tokyo (the slower lines were all fully booked)
So we had a stress free trip to Tokyo the long way and checked into the Andaz a day late.
Our last night we could not be in our suite - we booked the additional night at a reduced rate and moved down to the 6th floor in a normal room. Again it's what you expect at a centric. For Kanzawa the location, food at the hotel, and closeness to many other options is quite good. There are 4 7-11s within easy walking distance. Evening of 1/1 our dinner was cup noodles from a 7-11 a bit away from the hotel (but still close) as the station one was closed and the one you could see from the station packed with people.
To get to the sites in Kanazawa the Buses are on the other side of the station and quite easy to use. It was our 3rd time in Kanazawa and we had no issues getting around.
