I think the Hilton Formula (all Hamptons have free breakfast, all HGIs offer a standard cooked breakfast) is much better with no scope for the customer being disappointed or the hotel owner trying to cut corners at every step.
Marriott on the other hand has a hodge-podge of rules, no set standards and no system for enforcing whatever standards / rules that may exist. Having your cake and eating it too does not really work, even if cake is not an usual breakfast item.
