you make a prepaid reservation. AA Hotels charges you. You miss your flight and don’t make it to the hotel. You also forget to call the hotel. The hotel doesn’t report the failure to checkin, and gets paid. You get paid your miles/LP by AA Hotels.

Also, does anyone know if they extend the buy up past the end of February? I'd love to see where I finish before I decide if I want to do the buy up. I'd also like to see if my offer improves as it did when my last CC statement posted.
Can’t you pretty much forecast what your ending balance will be on 2/29? I have a spreadsheet in which I track all LP transactions, so I know what is “pending”. The only unknown for me is the exact credit card charges, but since I actually have received my status goal, I am not putting many charges on the AA card at the moment. And then I just added an unexpected hotel stay for a trip that came up out of the blue. But otherwise I know what Lp should still be incoming. Obviously that doesn’t help you knowing if and by how much the cost of buy-up will drop… but I looking at the offers some have posted, my hunch is that it will always be significantly more expensive than the alternative earning options.

I don’t know if they extend the buy up - hopefully someone else can address that.
