I've never had this sort of situation before. I didn't know I had the option of not accepting any of their suggestions.

If you have not accepted, recourse would be to phone and request the preferred flight, or to email the address that was in the Spain/MAD situation. You may need to be prepared for a 10.30am flight - it is hard to claim that is very early.

Other option is that EDI is within 300mi and is either 2.15 drive or 3 hours on the train, while not ideal, it may provide you something better than sitting in LHR for quite a few hours.

It's not very early per se. But my rental car is not from a company at the airport. They don't open until 8:00 am. Check-in opens at 8:30 and closes at 9:30 according to the Qantas agent.

If you havent accepted the 10:30 flight , then call back and try again ; if you accepted it, then that is the end of it

If too late, then it is only 55 minutes difference - alternatively, perhaps fly down the evening before to London
As I mentioned, I didn't know I had the option of not accepting. The Qantas email said I should call them. My concern was that the Qantas booking system would decide that my booking wasn't legal and would decide that it needed to cancel my booking.

I did tell the agent that I'd try to make arrangements around that time. He did agree to make notes in my booking that I had at least expressed concerns about my ability to get to the airport in time, given the other things I have to do that morning.
