An airline usually won't endorse your ticket over to another carrier unless there's a mechanical/weather delay on your original flight OR if your ticket is full-fare.

However, if you're ticketed on a Delta flight, you might be able to get on a Continental flight without any ticket swaps since the two airlines codeshare (sell seats on each other's flights) in certain markets. Call Delta or check at the airport to find out for sure.
