Test your WiFi calling before leaving the US since some carriers require E911 to be setup while activating WiFi calling which may not be possible from Japan. Some carriers/MVNO require a customer service call to setup WiFi calling such as RedPocket in their $30 annual plan.

I have never needed an international roaming plan when using WiFi. Who is your cell provider?
