Is San Francisco a "New Style" route yet? I'm not sure if that means the AVOD has been installed in economy. Obviously this offers advantages and disadvantages, the main disadvantage being narrower seats (and the advantages are moot if you don't want to watch movies). I did a great deal of grumbling when I was first seated in one of the new seats, complaining about its vice-like grip (I'm 198 cm and always have to sit in an exit row in economy where the seats are at their most pinching), but it didn't seem so bad after all on a recent return flight Narita-Heathrow. I would definitely rate ANA's service above United's, not only on board but at check-in as well. My top tip is to bring a bulldog clip with you. It allows you to retract the AVOD remote control and clip it in place so that it doesn't recoil. This gives you a little extra room and means that you don't have to keep fiddling for the controller.
