For the A350 & A330 they may be a commonality for crew, but the B787 crews most certainly are not rated to fly in A350. Do they just have extra crew on board to operate the return? I can't imagine that QR would keep crew idle in outstations for 3-6 days for such short (4-5h) flights?

Just to follow up on this I asked the CSD on my flight: it seems the flight deck is often staffed with a third crew member and they fly back. Cabin crew doesn't, they have a layover in India and fly back the next day.
