I would be very surprised if hiking poles would be allowed past security - regardless of size of bag
It would seem prudent to simply book a fare including luggage allowance and check the bag in - or pay in advance for a bag and avoid the at-airport cost
All hiking poles that I have come across have a spiked end, regardless of whether a rubber cover is provided
