IIRC, I had a flight in June 2023 SFO-EWR which I originally purchased Y and appied PP for upgrade. Later I took an offer to pay cash to RN. I did not not pull my PP back. I was upgraded to J at the gate. After the flight I noticed UA deducted 20 PP. I wrote to GS and they refunded 10 PP. So, I am not sure whether you can or cannot apply PP for upgrade from RN.
