This is normal. American Express has near zero tolerance for returned payments, unless your bank will certify that they made an error. See previous discussions:

AMEX closed my account [returned payment], please help!... (Thread includes links to several other threads with similar reports).

The Member Since date does not mean "continuously", it's just the date of your first card account.
