You only need to be platinum to BUY a LP award ticket. Upgrades are offered to many regardless of status as very documented on this thread.
Rules are that you can’t upgrade from award ticket but there have been several posts above in last few months from people that did. I don’t know if miles were used from FB or a partner. I wonder if maybe the blocking automation isn’t smart enough and doesn’t apply to partner awards maybe??
Data point…you DO get the upgrade offer on economy tickets that have been upgraded to Z using DL GUCs. In case anyone wondered…
