You cannot book a class of service that does not have a fare to go with it. If you book Z for instance, there has to be a corresponding fare to go with it. Z class may

Yes, but my issue is that I don't want Z. I want any of the other first class fares. The reason is to top up Virgin tier points if I'm short for qualifying for renewal of Gold status by say, 40 tier points. I can get 40 tier points SFO-LAX flying in for $279, vs 20 in Z for a few $ less.
Having said that, I see they've just changed the chart which used to say "First/Business/Delta One" F, D, C, I earn 40 VS tier points to "First Class J/D" earn 40 VS tier points and First Class I/Z" only earn 20, with "Business/Delta One J,D,C,I" earning 40 and "Business/Delta One Z" earning only 20.
I assume that as I'm traveling domestic in First Class, I'll now need to have a J or D class to get the 40 points.
I hope they'll honor the 40 points for the First Class I ticket I purchased when the former earnings table was in place (I have a screenshot to back me up!)
