But I agree with your sentiment about avoiding this aircraft. I personally go beyond "whenever I can avoid it" and will choose a different carrier to avoid AC's 737 flights.
Granting a door plug falling out might be a control surface for a few seconds, this AD is about control surfaces the designers put in on purpose.
TFA is very clear this is new and unrelated.
