From a technical service bulletin perspective, there isn’t much difference between Boeing and Airbus, demonstrating the engineering is sound in both cases. I was the IT representative at WestJet in the selection process between the 787-9 and A330-900neo (A350 was also considered, but was a bit too big for WS routes). The 787 fit the mission profile a bit better, but it was a close race. I’ve always been a bit more favourable towards Airbus as a manufacturer, but pragmatic decision making for the best fit for use has so far been slightly more towards Boeing in the case of WS.
I understand the 787, but the Max is a different animal. The 737 is a old airframe, which has been updated one to many times. I think most airlines buy them for price. They are the dollar store version of aircraft.
