Be aware that travel from place to place in India can be a pain no matter what you do. We were told not to take trains.
Not take trains? Have you heard of the Palace on Wheels tour? It's a train with berths that takes you to several destinations via train, centered on the state of Rajahstan (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaiselmer, etc.); begins in Delhi, and includes a visit to Agra (The Taj Mahal). It's actually a very time efficient way to tour---you sleep on the trains in the evening and it arrives at your destination in the morning where you take a day tour of the place.

Service on the trains is quite good and the cabins are clean.
