Maybe they're doing CAN-HKG-TPE, somehow this is a good mileage run route.
I wrote a walkthrough on how to catch CX983/CX989 starting from Hong Kong @ another forum. It turns out most people did it for a lower price (especially Non-Mainland PH vs Hong Kong PH) or redemption ticket.
