Modifying the reservation on the Marriott website will be fine and you won't be charged a cancellation fee. In order to get the change dialog to come up, you may have to look the reservation up by confirmation number. If you try to do it via My Trips it may only have a button available for check-in.

P.S. This must be done by modifying the existing reservation. Cancelling the existing reservation and booking a new reservation will result in your being charged the cancellation fee.
