I don't believe so, because they have to be booked under a specific Marriott rate code [it used to be Z34], but it's worth calling and trying.

2) Does the upgraded stay need to occur before the certificate expiration date? Or do you just have to apply the certificate to an upcoming stay before it expires?
The stay needs to start before the certificate expiration date.
