I skipped the last leg of a return flight from Tokyo NRT to LAS on AA. I got my bags in customs and walked out at LAX. I flew AA home the next day LAX-BNA. I m sure they didn't mind as the LAX to LAS flight is usually so full.

Don't ask to check bags to RDU. Just relieve them at customs and leave. if they frown, they frown.
