Hokuriku Shinkansen extension from Kanazawa to Tsuruga will start service on March 16.
Currently there is direct limited express Thunderbird running between Osaka-Kanazawa, and direct limited express Shirasagi running between Nagoya-Kanazawa. Starting March 16 there will be no more direct service (no transfer) between Osaka/Nagoya-Kanazawa. Passengers will take regular limited express on Osaka/Nagoya-Tsuruga and transfer at Tsuruga to Shinkansen for Tsuruga-Kanazawa journey. After March 16, the travel time of Osaka-Kanazawa will be 22 min. faster and travel time of Nagoya-Kanazawa will be 16 min. faster. It is not much of travel time improvement due to new Shinkansen,
Currently, limited express Thunderbird running (Osaka-Kanazawa) and limited express Shirasagi (Nagoya-Kanazawa) run using 681/683 model trains, which runs with 130 km/hr (81 miles/hr) maximum speed, which is the fastest in regular track JR trains. Due to the demand of Osaka/Nagoya-Kanazawa traffic, JR already uses fastest limited express trains and with the transfer at Tsuruga station there is not that much time advantage by switching Tsuruga-Kanazawa portion to Shinkansen.
Also, the transfer at Tsuruga will not be like a transfer at Taeko Onsen of West Kyushu Sinkansen where Shinkansen train and regular limited Express train will arrive/depart on the same platform across from each other. At Tsuruga station Shinkansen will arrive at the platform located on the third level of the station (equivalent high of 12th fl. or regular commercial building) and regular limited express trains arrive/depart from the platform located at the ground floor. Passengers need to go up and down between these heights to transfer between Shinkansen and limited express trains at Tsuruga station. And there are tickets gates between Shinkansen and regular limited express transfer at Tsuruga station, passengers need to have their tickets ready.
The fare on Osaka-Kanazawa will change from 7590 yen to 9410 yen, and Nagoya-Kanazawa will change from 7260yen to 9080 yen. The current JR Hokuliku Line Kanazawa-Tsuruga portion will no longer be JR line starting March 16, likely not included in JR Pass.
No, there is no plan set about Osaka/Nagoya-Tsuruga portion of Shinkansen.
