To save them money. Once you've made a "voluntary" change, there will likely be no recourse for the hidden downgrade.
Edit: By the way, as a frequent Delta flyer, I will say that their app does this as well during IRROPS, and you will not be automatically offered F on paid F itineraries. However, with them, I've been able to call CS and get put back into F on rebooked segments.
