This is why we can't have nice things.

Not that the airlines have my sympathy either at this point with all the annoying credit card hawking and perks through non-airline spend. They got greedy too and have created an irresistible shiny object for some people to play with and try to manipulate.
I read an old blog post yesterday that I thought was well-balanced. I'll share it in a minute and prepare for the "credit card hawking" police to object. Well, let me just do this now - VFTW from 7/2020:

The interesting part to me was the comments. After some real participation, a couple of presumably old-timers voiced opposition to folks who didn't earn their miles from butt-in-seat flying. That ship sailed way before I started traveling for fun. Get over it

You can't earn status from credit card bonuses, at least I'm not aware of CC miles counting towards status. So you have that over miles earned from CC spend. But that's it. There are no A and B class miles. Miles are miles.

But we're all playing games and manipulating? It's simply following terms and conditions and not making up ones that are not there. I get a CC, I meet the spend, I get miles that count towards a flight. The fact that I can fly J when I want and haven't flown 100 times (paid) this year is not relevant. How many of those pants-in-seats miles were earned from business flights going to personal accounts? No, I don't care, just making up silly reasons someone else might be bitter.

Thanks for pointing out the the airlines and banks created airline CCs for their potential benefit. We just need to keep them in check and ensure their czar-like thinking isn't all-encompassing.
