Seems like it depends which agent you get - my last attempt (months ago) was a "No" elevated to a supervisor with a "No" (as in, you can't append the leg because the entire award wasn't available anymore).
I can’t speak for AS examples specifically here, but most airlines would need to reticket the itinerary, which means the availability would need to be there after the existing ticketed itinerary is cancelled. That’s risky, it’s one of those cases where the end result is exactly the same either way, but the airline process to reach the result is rife with procedural obstacles.
