Hotel changed cancelation policy after I booked

Booked a Bonvoy hotel for April for 2023 about a year ago as soon as the dates opened up in April 2023. The cancelation policy was 2 days before arrival in the confirmation email. I went to have to cancel now unfortunately and it says I need to pay a significant fee for cancelling as the policy is now you can’t cancel for free 1 day after booking. I knew I’d never sign up for this, so went back and indeed, the policy in my confirmation email said I could cancel up to 2 days before. And as usual, the Ambassador service is not being helpful.
Any thoughts on what to do? I suppose I could take up with my credit card or take to small claims court, but shady practices all around and I don’t know why I’m surprised at how unhelpful Marriott is these days.
