And your statement completely falls apart at the high end. No one is choosing to stay at a StR or FS due to the cheapest online rates.
My parents stay in hotels probably about 10-15 nights a year and are CC Platinum - they don't care about upgrades (as they always book two-bed rooms so they don't have to share a bed), but they will absolutely complain if housekeeping isn't offered daily or if something is broken from an engineering perspective. They love an Aloft or Four Points - no clue why. They wouldn't be happy with that TownePlace and those horrid hallways.
