Ask and see if the agent can see the itin in their system, that's what I did. I found a NH F flight I wanted, and tacked on an AC married segment. The itin I expected was the same one the agent ended up telling me was bookable. I'd expect you'd be able to trade the AC segment with another *A carrier/codeshare partner (say, with UA); in my case, the agent said my city pairs only had one itinerary available.
