It has been a while since I flew them, but United allowed seat changes via its app even after check in closed. I remember once sitting at a gate at EWR waiting to board a flight. United publish seat maps on their gate screens. I spotted an empty row 10 minutes before boarding and was able to switch my seat and refresh my boarding pass.

I fear that is a few steps beyond the ability of the BA app.
