There was, but the 2nd email to tell you that came after the seat change email. I assume the bots shuttle you over whilst the flight is still live and the seat change email is generated, then BA cancel the flight and out comes the 2nd email. If BA supressed the seat change email they'd probably get it wrong and do it when the flight isn't cancelled as well.
