As JAL members we still have the advantage of getting access at 360 days out, which most programs do not. Another way is to upgrade from J fares. Hopefully OW alliance widen upgrades will be as useless as Star Alliance.
Possibly as he mentioned he is also flying back in F so he did the western meal inbound, then will try the japanese one outbound. Although I would assume he was able to negotiate something with JL to promote it.
Clever use of the smaller bed and I bet he is counting the months left before he starts paying for full-fare for his kid. :-)
