Paying for Air Canada aircraft seats on UA ticket?

I have a trip coming up in a few weeks, booked via the United website on 016 ticket stock with most of the flights operated by AC. On the outbound (TPA-YYZ-YLW) I am booked in P class on AC and was able to reserve my seat without issues via the United website.

For the return (YLW-YVR-SFO) the YLW-YVR flight is on a Q400 in L class, as there is no J or F cabin. If I click the link from United to AC to pick my seats the AC website wants to charge me. Not just for a preferred seat but any seat on the plane. Is this right? AC's website seems to indicate so, but it seems a tad goofy to me that with 3/4 legs being in the front cabin and being *G I would have to pay for an advanced seat selection.

Details on AC website: https://www.aircanada.com/us/en/aco/...lection.html#/
