Why is it impossible to (self) change your seat after the boarding card is issued?

I’m curious as to whether there is a rationale behind the fact that once you have issued your boarding card it is then not possible to change your seat anymore. Is it an IT limitation or an intentional decision?

Other airlines (Lufthansa and ITA to name a few) allow seat changes until the check-is has closed, even if you have a boarding card.
