This is all by design. The more complex to use, the less use there is... which means more retained profit from the annual fee.
Oh absolutely. Amex is the king of these stupid statement credit games, for better and worse. If you can play and win, they tend to be the most lucrative ecosystem, but you are putting in real work for it.
The annoying thing is that the other issuing banks are starting to follow.
