On a separate note, back in the bad old days Special Branch would have a permanent presence at LHR and all Irish arriving passengers would have to walk past their desk, and they would stop the odd guy/gal and ask them to fill in a landing card and then their details would be checked. One day Tom Cruise and a few travel companions arrived from Ireland and as they passed by the SB desk, low and behold the SB detective stepped out from behind his desk and stopped Tom and asked him to fill in a landing card. His travel companions were all aghast and made it known that Tom was not a threat but a famous Hollywood actor. The SB detective was unmoved and to be fair to Tom, he was quite gracious and cooperated completely. Tom knew all too well that the copper was just looking for his autograph. I think the lads pinned the signature on the wall of the adjacent SB office.
