Sorry it didn't work for you, but it sounds like you got a lot of bad information. The managers don't clear the SNAs/NUAs. The system does.
How does the system not clear an upgrade if they are available? I spent two hours with Marriott on the phone in the car while my wife was driving to Florida a week ago to stay at this property and am annoyed. I booked this property for the number of nights because they showed upgrade availability and I wanted to use them. I have no plans for any other stays this year (yes I know it's January - I have significant other vacation plans that don't involve hotel stays) and wanted to burn the SNAs. This was really frustrating.
