In late 2019, AA began to close Advantage accounts, saying that folks had acted in fraudulent ways by opening excessive credit cards. It's been long enough ago that I don't remember all the details, but it involved receiving targeted offers that were intended to be used by the addressee but could be used by anyone. A certain kind of mailer could be used by up to 4 people. Barclay and Citi allowed the cards and issued the sign up points once minimum spend was made. This went on for a couple years before AA called a halt, alleging fraud, and wiping out accounts in perpetuity.
There was a blogger who wrote a fairly compelling account as to what happened to him and why he considered it unjust. I can no longer find it online.

AA has just been sued by a couple who lost 1MM combined AA miles. It sounds as though this could become a class action suit. The case is Nachison et al v American Airlines Inc, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 24-00530.
