I fell foul of a Qatar rule which defines 'stopover" as between 12 hours and four days: stay longer than 4 days and there's no entitlement to any nights in subsidised hotels.

I presume you are in Business and you checked your itinerary on the stopover website, but yes, you can stay longer and pay on your own wherever after the free nights.
