BA will add a UK domestic connection on to a long haul Avios redemption for free. They will certainly do this at the point of booking and many people seem to have had success getting it added on afterwards as well given that there seem to be booking problems trying to do this online.
I have no idea whether the same thing applies if the booking is through QR.
