UA Domestic G fare shows $35 charge for 1st checked bag. When are they free?

[Edited] Is there a way to edit the subject header?

I don't usually check bags, but I was checking all the online ticket parts...since I haven't flown much after 2011 (so all my United status has expired).
I thought first bags were free on non-BE tickets, but I guess that's not true.
Was just reading that in 2010, most US airlines started charging $50 for 1st bags (but I still had status then, so didn't notice).

Looked at 10 upcoming trips.
6: Free 1st bag (2 purchased with United credit card, All K fares)
4: $35 1st bag (1 G fare, 2 K fare, 1 L fare)

Signed up for a United credit card 4 months ago (Sep 2023), which came with a free Baggage Subscription which expired Dec 31, 2023.
(A) Three flights purchased in 2023, during baggage subscription period. Two have $35 fees. One has free 1st bag.
(B) Other seven flights purchased in 2024, after baggage subscription expired. Two have $35 fees. Five have free 1st bag.

Some trips were partially/fully paid by FFCs (which might have been from flights purchased with my United credit card).

I'm not planning to check any bags, so this isn't financially important. Curious how airline travel works in 2024, and deciding whether I want to qualify for United Silver in 2024 (Only 2,600 PQP in 2023).

Any thoughts?
Thanks.
