As many of people have said, it seems that PE is now available for booking using AA Miles. I already have an award ticket in economy for HND - ORD with a connecting ORD - MCO also in Economy (U). If I call can they simply upgrade the HND - ORD leg and deduct the 15k difference or is having the connecting leg going to cause an issue? My first theory was just to put a new ticket on hold HND-ORD-MCO then cancel my current ticket and use the miles once they’re reinstated but as of right now there’s no extra U award for my ORD - MCO so I don’t want to lose that.
In the "old days" it was easy to make such a change. With AA, from a mileage transaction standpoint, they technically need to cancel your exsting Y award and rebook a new PE award, but you could do that all on the same phone call and without losing your existing award space.
Now, many agents simply tell you that changes are not allowed to any partner awards, or they have a real hard time with it even if they're willing to try. So you can try calling AA and see if they can rebook you in PE on the HND-ORD leg, YMMV.
