Having flown JFK (or MSP) - HNL many times, I’d say the chances of a summertime complimentary upgrade as a PM is pretty much slim to none. I also agree that the lie flat is more important on the way back to the mainland. Getting SkyClub access in HNL is a plus; while crowded, the food is decent and it is more comfortable than the waiting area at the gates.
