You can only register for the autogates at a couple of counters. Look out for a very small sign for registration to the right side of the autogates as you approach the immigration counters.
Once you've been successfully registered, make sure you fill up the MDAC before arrival on your next trip. Use the "Check Egate Eligibility Status" tab on the MDAC website to confirm that you can use the autogates upon entry. If you don't fill up the MDAC, it will show that you are not eligible. Once you fill it up, it should give you the green light to use the autogates. I had no issue using the autogate in KUL on subsequent trips.
